DELHI, INDIA, June 15, 2012 – Dr. Karl Michael Millauer, Senior Vice President of Aquatech – a global leader in water purification technology for industrial and infrastructure markets – presented a paper at World Clean Coal Week, India Focus 2012, which took place in Delhi on June 14-15.
His presentation, Water Management and Zero Liquid Discharge Challenges in Clean Coal Technology (CTX) Projects, addressed a number of topics including CTX Water Issues, An Integrated Approach to CTX Waste, and Future Issues in CTX Waste. He also presented a case study on a project successfully implemented for YTH in Inner Mongolia, China.
“CTX offers a great opportunity to harness the coal resources of the country. However, the process generates significant quantities of wastewater that is very difficult to treat. So the questions are, how do we take advantage of this great opportunity in a reliable manner without harming the environment, and how do we achieve this in an economically viable way,” said Millauer.
“Striking a balance between reliability and cost is possible if certain points are followed. Our experience shows the best results by employing a system that combines biological treatment coupled with the patented high efficiency reverse osmosis (HERO™) process and thermal evaporation zero liquid discharge (ZLD), and integrating these technologies early in the design phase. Ideally, there should be a single point of responsibility and accountability in the execution phase,” he noted. “Moreover, from a financial standpoint, long term operation and maintenance supervision must be considered, not just the initial cost.
“Detailed knowledge of the serious water issues is required in order to achieve a successful program,” said Millauer. “This is difficult wastewater. A holistic, integrated approach is needed early in the design phase to maximize reliability and minimize cost,” he added.
Aquatech is a worldwide leader in treating challenging waters in industrial and infrastructure markets. The company has extensive experience in the power industry and has pioneered a number of solutions including hybrid ZLD.
