CANONSBURG, November 2008 – A consortium led by Aquatech International Corporation successfully commissioned Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facilities at four of ENEL’s coal fired power plants throughout Italy.
The feed for the plants is Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) purge wastewater. Aquatech’s integrated solution included a combination of physical/chemical, evaporation and crystallization technologies that enabled ENEL to achieve ZLD and environmental compliance. The four power plants where the ZLD systems have been commissioned are Brindisi, Fusina, La Spezia and Sulcis. The fifth power plant at Torrevaldaliga is under pre-commissioning activities and expected to be commissioned soon.
To execute this project, Aquatech formed a joint venture with its consortium partner, Carlo Gavazzi Impianti Spa, (CGI), under the name Zenit S.c.ar.l.
“The ZLD Technology adopted to treat FGD wastewaters for the ENEL ZLD projects is first of the kind in the industry. We are very pleased to report that the plants performed as designed and helped ENEL meet their environmental objectives,” said Suresh Kumar, Aquatech’s Director of Projects responsible for execution of these projects.
