MUMBAI, INDIA, September 6, 2012 – Ajanta Sarkar, General Manager – Applications, Aquatech Systems Asia, India, presented a paper, An Overview of Produced Water Treatment for Recycle for Enhanced Oil Recovery, at the 19th annual India Oil & Gas Review Summit (IORS) and International Exhibition, September 6-7 in Mumbai.
The paper, which is very relevant to the Summit theme of Sustainable Oil & Gas (Energy) for the Future with Business and Innovative Technology, is co-authored by Sarkar and Arun Mittal, Director – Wastewater Treatment Applications, Aquatech International Corporation, USA. The presentation provides an overview of produced water treatment using conventional and emerging technologies and further describes the treatment technologies, i.e., evaporative and ion-exchange processes, used to treat produced water to enable its recycle for steam flood.
“As the existing crude oil formations are aging, the ratio of crude oil production to the volume of produced water in general is decreasing. As a result, the produced water volume to be handled is increasing, and managing it in environmentally sustainable manner poses a challenge,” said Sarkar.
“In the beginning, these oil formations produced crude oil under natural pressure. However, with time due to depletion of crude oil reserves and other geophysical factors changes, the crude oil could no longer be extracted under natural pressure. Extracting crude oil from such formations requires the use of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques to create enough pressure in the formation so that oil flows to the surface. Water flood, steam flood and carbon dioxide sequestrations are some of the techniques that are used in EOR. Aquatech is one of the few companies in the world that has a diverse range of technologies not only to treat produced water but also to treat it in such a way that it can be recycled back to meet the water requirement for EOR, thus minimizing the impact of its disposal,” Sarkar continued.
Aquatech is a worldwide leader in treating challenging waters in industrial and infrastructure markets and has extensive experience in the global oil & gas industry, both upstream and downstream.
